Fact sheet on Domestic Violence in Colorado

The Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence was established in 1977 as a nonprofit statewide membership program.  Members include domestic violence service providers and community members.
 
The Coalition works to end domestic violence through three main initiatives: strengthening Colorado’s domestic violence shelters by providing training and technical assistance; creating change in Colorado by developing and supporting public policy and legislative initiatives that protect victims and survivors of domestic violence; and engaging Colorado in the movement to end violence by promoting awareness of domestic violence to the media and general public. Domestic Violence Quick Facts:

  • Nearly one in four adult women is a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. 1
  • On average, three women are killed by a current or former intimate partner each day in America. 2
  • On September 15, 2011, 1317 victims of domestic violence were served by Colorado domestic violence programs.  Of those, 622 adults and children took refuge in emergency or transitional housing and 695 were served through non-residential programs, such as counseling, legal advocacy and children's support groups. 3
  • Women are at an increased risk of harm shortly after separation from an abusive partner.4
